JRS Training Construction Courses - Bespoke Bricklaying Course

Bespoke Brickwork with Dyer & Butler

As companies grow, skilled, experienced workers progress into management positions, leaving gaps in the workforce. For the last few months, we’ve been delivering a bespoke course focused on upskilling workers to fill this gap, providing them with the practical skills and knowledge to undertake the specialist works required by our client.

JRS Training have been embarking on a new chapter in their mission to build careers in the construction industry by working with various companies to create unique, bespoke courses which combine nationally recognised qualifications with industry-specific needs.

In partnership with Dyer & Butler, a part of M Group Services’ Transport Division, JRS Training & Assessment have launched a bespoke Brickwork Development Programme, providing specialist brickwork and structures training for Dyer & Butler’s operatives internally for the first time.

Upon identifying a skills gap within their workforce competency framework, Dyer & Butler’s Training Team contacted us to launch the Brickwork Development Programme. The course provides operatives working on site with the basic trowel skills and knowledge to undertake brickwork repairs and demolition to masonry structures, in line with Network Rail’s standard detail drawings.

Since the launch of the programme, the first operatives have worked hard towards their certifications, completing their classroom theory modules which took place at Dyer & Butler’s head office in Nursling as well as the practical elements of the course.

Working with their client, Network Rail and Gunwharf Quays, Dyer & Butler was granted access to a heritage arch with the work completed on betterment to the structure as part of the coursework.

Heritage and structure repair work is a specialist sector, and it can be hard to locate bricklayers in the industry that can carry out repair work. By implementing this programme, Dyer & Butler can deliver this work efficiently and cost-effectively to its clients.

Speaking on the Brickwork Development Programme, Robbie Jones, Contracts Manager at Dyer & Butler, said:

“On successful completion of the course, the operatives achieve a suite of NVQs ranging from NVQ Level 1 in Conforming to Health and Safety to NVQ Level 3 in Repairing and Maintaining Structures in the Workplace.”

“During a recent visit to observe the course, it was great to see the progress they have made in such a short duration. You can see an improvement in their workmanship and confidence in carrying out the work.”

“At M Group Services, we are committed to providing training opportunities for our people. These opportunities ensure we attract, develop, and retain the next generation of highly skilled, forward-thinking, and technically competent individuals.”

Shane Flood Project Manager at Dyer & Butler, said:

“Since the operatives have been on the course you can see an improvement in their works completed on site for our valued client, the standard in their work and confidence to carry out the repair work has significantly improved.”
