An essential, lifetime qualification for slingers
Get your blue card
Developed for achievement in a real workplace environment, this internationally recognised qualification assesses and verifies your existing skills, knowledge, training and experience in safely carrying out the role of a slinger/signaller.
If you have the slinger/signaller category on a Red CPCS or NPORS card, completion of this NVQ will allow you to obtain your Blue CPCS or NPORS cards in the same category.
NVQ LEVEL 2 – SLINGER/SIGNALLER
Who attends?
This Level 2 NVQ is suitable for you if you are already a competent slinger.

Certification
NVQs are lifetime qualifications. However, blue CPCS, CSCS and NPORS cards must be renewed every five years.
Length
On average, this NVQ takes between 1-3 months to complete, depending on when the site visit can be completed.

Blue CSCS Skilled Worker Cards
To get a 5-year CSCS blue card, you’ll need to complete any Level 2 NVQ and pass the CITB Health, Safety & Environment test for Operatives.

NPORS Blue Competent Operator Cards
To get a blue NPORS card, you must complete an NPORS EWT, hold an NVQ in the relevant category and have passed the HS&E test within the last 2 years.

CPCS Blue Competent Operator Cards
To get a blue CPCS card, you must pass the CPCS theory and practical assessments and have passed the HS&E test within the last 2 years.

NVQ LEVEL 2 – SLINGER/SIGNALLER
How does it work?
- Your assessor will call you to carry out a profile and ensure this is the right course for you.
- We’ll visit you on-site to carry out your assessment in person. This includes inducting you onto the course, carrying out the knowledge portion of the qualification through a professional discussion, and collecting evidence of your competence through recorded observations and photographs.
- Once this has been completed, we’ll obtain a testimony from your line manager or similar witness.
- We’ll sign off your portfolio and have it checked by our internal verifier before claiming your certificate from the awarding body, NOCN.
- We’ll receive your certificate and pass it on to you.
Course funding
If you are up to date with your CITB levy returns, you can claim a £600 grant back upon completion of this qualification.
This grant can be claimed in conjunction with the Skills and Training Fund.

NVQ LEVEL 2 – SLINGER/SIGNALLER
What’s covered?
The Level 2 NVQ in Controlling Lifting Operations (Slinger/Signaller) is made up of three units:
- Conforming to productive working practices in the workplace
- Conforming to general health, safety and welfare in the workplace
- Slinging, signalling and the movement of suspended loads
This award can be completed at the same time as other plant categories, including Forward Tipping Dumper, Ride-on Roller, and 360° excavator.
