Designed for all site supervisors

Part of CITB‘s Site Safety Plus suite of courses, SSSTS provides an understanding of health, safety, welfare and environmental issues in construction to both new and experienced supervisors. You’ll learn about your legal responsibilities and the importance of promoting health and safety awareness as a supervisor.

It is a requirement that all site supervisors working on Build UK construction sites hold this qualification.

Who attends?

The Site Supervisor Safety Training Scheme course is for you if you’re working, or will soon be working, as a site supervisor/foreman.

Please note that you must have a good understanding of spoken and written English to complete this course.

Certification

Certification for this course is valid for 5 years.

To remain certified in this area, you will need to take the SSSTS Refresher course before the expiry date.

What’s covered?

The CITB SSSTS course provides a comprehensive overview of health and safety issues in the construction industry, expanding on the content of the Health & Safety Awareness course and exploring the legal responsibilities of construction site supervisors.

Upon completion of the course, you’ll have an understanding of your duties as a supervisor with regards to:

  • The Health & Safety at Work Act
  • The CDM (Construction Design and Management) Regulations and how your responsibilities fit around those of other duty holders
  • Fire prevention and control
  • Risk assessments and method statements
  • Personal protective equipment
  • Hazardous substances
  • Occupational health
  • Accidents and first aid
  • Manual handling
  • Working at height

What to bring

You’ll need to bring a form of ID, such as your driving license, passport, or CSCS card.

We’ll provide you with a pen and paper for notetaking, but you’re welcome to bring your own notebook.

It’s a full day course each day, so please bring a packed lunch. If the course is taking place at our office, there is a café on-site.

If the course is taking place at our premises, you’ll find us at Bizspace, Poole. When you arrive, please head to reception. If you’ve parked in the car park, you’ll need to input your number plate into the screen at the front desk for free parking.

You’ll get 2 days of learning with an experienced, professional instructor who will ensure you leave feeling confident with the course material.

You’ll also get a copy of the GE706 Site Safety Simplified and GT700 Toolbox Talks publications – and unlimited tea and coffee. Upon passing the course, you’ll receive an CITB e-certificate.

Course funding

If you are up to date with your CITB levy returns, you can claim a £140 grant back upon completion of the 2-day initial SSSTS course and £70 back upon completion of the 1-day refresher.

This grant can be claimed in conjunction with the Skills and Training Fund.

Assessment

Continual assessment takes place throughout this course, with the trainer ensuring that you understand the material and feel confident going back into the workplace as a supervisor. This includes an activity where delegates will present a toolbox talk to the group.

There is a final exam at the end of the second day which consists of 25 questions and has a pass mark of 80%. The test is made up of 22 multiple choice questions, and 3 short written questions. There are also four safety-critical questions in the test, all of which must be answered correctly in order to pass.

Additional support is available for those who have difficulty with reading or writing. Please let us know in advance where possible so we can help you.
