The essential introductory health and safety course

People who work on site are more likely to be hurt at work than in almost any other industry. Our Health & Safety Awareness course highlights the legal responsibilities of those working on building sites to report problems, cooperate with their employer, and keep themselves and others safe.

Upon completion of the course, learners can take the Health, Safety & Environment test for Operatives to obtain their CSCS Green card.

Who attends?

The Health & Safety Awareness course is for you if:

  • you’re just starting out in the construction industry,
  • you are an operative working on any type of building site, in any trade,
  • you require your CSCS Green card, or
  • you’re someone who visits a building site for any purpose and you need to understand the hazards and risks associated with it.

Please note that you must have a good understanding of spoken and written English to complete this course.

Certification for this course is valid for 5 years.

To remain certified in this area, you will need to retake the course before the expiry date.

Green CSCS
Labourer Card

To get a 2-year CSCS green card, you’ll need pass this Level 1 Health & Safety in a Construction Environment and pass the CITB Health, Safety & Environment test for Operatives.

The CSCS Labourer card is is only for those in an unskilled role. You cannot work in a skilled role with a green card.

What’s covered?

The Health & Safety Awareness course teaches you about some of the most common construction hazards, including working at height, COSHH, asbestos, noise, dust, fire, and manual handling – and how to control them.

You’ll also:

  • Gain an understanding of the need to prevent accidents, plus your responsibility for your own safety and the safety of others
  • Discover ways in which everyone can help achieve better practical standards of safety on site
  • Know your legal requirements and liabilities
  • Understand how to use risk assessments and method statements to carry out work in a safe and efficient manner
  • Know how to report unsafe acts to prevent an accident

Are you a supervisor or manager? Our CITB SSSTS and SMSTS courses might be a better fit for you.

What to bring

You’ll need to bring a form of ID, such as your driving license, passport, or CSCS card.

We’ll provide you with a pen and paper for notetaking, but you’re welcome to bring your own notebook.

It’s a full day course, so please bring a packed lunch. If the course is taking place at our office, there is a café on-site.

If the course is taking place at our premises, you’ll find us at Bizspace, Poole. When you arrive, please head to reception. If you’ve parked in the car park, you’ll need to input your number plate into the screen at the front desk for free parking.

If the course is taking place elsewhere, we’ll send you the details beforehand. And if you get lost, you can always call us.

You’ll also receive a course workbook to complete – and unlimited tea and coffee. Upon passing the course, you’ll receive an e-certificate which you can use to apply for your CSCS green card.

If you are up to date with your CITB levy returns, you can claim a £60 grant back upon completion of this course.

This grant can be claimed in conjunction with the Skills and Training Fund.

Alternatively, if you are part of a CITB Employer Network, you can get 70% of the cost of the course paid for by CITB up front.

Assessment

Continual assessment takes place throughout this course, with the trainer ensuring that you understand the material and feel confident going back into the workplace. There is a final multiple choice test at the end of the day which consists of 25 questions and has a pass mark of 80%.

Additional support is available for those who have difficulty with reading or writing. Please let us know in advance where possible so we can help you.
