Get your blue card
Developed for achievement in a real workplace environment, this internationally recognised qualification assesses and verifies your existing skills, knowledge, training and experience in safely carrying out general construction operations such as installing drainage and placing concrete.
NVQ Level 2 – General Construction Operations
Who attends?
This Level 2 NVQ is suitable for you if you are already a competent general construction operative and are employed in a role where you carry out general construction operations.
Certification
NVQs are lifetime qualifications. However, blue CSCS cards must be renewed every five years.
Length
On average, this NVQ takes between 1-3 months to complete, depending on when the site visit can be completed.

To get a 5-year CSCS blue card, you’ll need to complete any Level 2 NVQ and pass the CITB Health, Safety & Environment test for Operatives.
NVQ Level 2 – General Construction Operations
How does it work?
- Your assessor will call you to carry out a profile and ensure this is the right course for you.
- We’ll visit you on-site to carry out your assessment in person. This includes inducting you onto the course, carrying out the knowledge portion of the qualification through a professional discussion, and collecting evidence of your competence through recorded observations and photographs.
- Once this has been completed, we’ll obtain a testimony from your line manager or similar witness.
- We’ll sign off your portfolio and have it checked by our internal verifier before claiming your certificate from the awarding body, NOCN.
- We’ll receive your certificate and pass it on to you.
Course funding
If you are up to date with your CITB levy returns, there are different ways in which you can receive funding for this qualification.
- Claim a £600 grant back upon completion of the qualification.
- Apply for a Skills and Training Fund to use towards your training costs.
The CITB Skills and Training Fund can be used in tandem with CITB grants to get the entire cost of the course covered, with the grant paid on completion of the qualification.
NVQ Level 2 – General Construction Operations
What’s covered?
The NVQ Level 2 – Level 2 NVQ Certificate in Construction and Civil Engineering Operations – General Construction is made up of three mandatory units and two optional units. You can complete one or both of the optional units.
Mandatory units:
- Conforming to productive working practices
- Conforming to general health, safety and welfare
- Installing, maintaining, and removing work area protection and safety equipment in the workplace
Optional units:
- Installing drainage in the workplace
- Placing and finishing concrete in the workplace
