Understand your responsibilities
Designed by CITB to highlight the health and safety responsibilities of directors and senior managers, and the implications of non-compliance, from moral to legal.
The course provides a summary of how to promote a positive organisational culture for health and safety, and gives attendees the opportunity to discuss their thoughts about health and safety and their own responsibilities in an open forum.

Who attends?
This course has been developed for directors and senior managers active in a health and safety strategic role in the built environment from any organisation in construction or civil engineering. Example roles include:
- Finance/Ops director
- Senior QS
- Principal designer
- Senior/principal engineer
- Company secretary
- Contracts manager
- Senior project manager
- Non-executive director
Please note that you must have a good understanding of spoken and written English to complete this course, as well as a working knowledge of health and safety legislation.
Certification
Certification for this course is valid for 5 years.
To remain certified in this area, you will need to retake the course before the expiry date.
Length
The main course takes one day.
Prior to the course, attendees must complete the pre-course eLearning module which takes approximately 90 minutes and can be completed in multiple sessions.
The eLearning certificate must be sent to us prior to the course for audit purposes.

What’s covered?
Directors Role for Health & Safety aims to help you to recognise the moral, economic and legal costs and implications of decisions made in the boardroom that may make your business liable.
You’ll also:
- Gain an understanding of the significance of strategic management of risks
- Learn about the range of consequences from failing to manage health and safety effectively
- Consider the importance of competent duty holders, and the significance of their cooperation, communication and coordination of health and safety on projects
- Recognise the need to appoint competent health and safety assistance, and the limitations of such an appointment, and
- Identify the basic tools to introduce a proactive health and safety culture into an organisation, and the benefits of this approach.
Are you a supervisor or junior manager? Our CITB SSSTS and SMSTS courses might be a better fit for you.
You’ll need to bring a form of ID, such as your driving license, passport, or CSCS card.
We’ll provide you with a pen and paper for notetaking, but you’re welcome to bring your own notebook.
It’s a full day course, so please bring a packed lunch. If the course is taking place at our office, there is a café on-site.
If the course is taking place at our premises, you’ll find us at Bizspace, Poole. When you arrive, please head to reception. If you’ve parked in the car park, you’ll need to input your number plate into the screen at the front desk for free parking.
If the course is taking place elsewhere, we’ll send you the details beforehand. And if you get lost, you can always call us.
You’ll get a day of learning with an experienced, professional instructor who will ensure you leave feeling confident with the course material.
You’ll also receive a course workbook to complete, plus A Legal and Management GE700A – and unlimited tea and coffee. Upon passing the course, you’ll receive an e-certificate which lasts for five years.
Course funding
If you are up to date with your CITB levy returns, you can claim a £60 grant back upon completion of this course.
This grant can be claimed in conjunction with the Skills and Training Fund.
Alternatively, if you are part of a CITB Employer Network, you can get 70% of the cost of the course paid for by CITB up front.

Directors Role for Health & Safety
Assessment
Continual assessment takes place throughout the course’s group exercises, where you will be assessed on how well you work as a team, making group decisions and actively contributing to the discussion.
There is a final test at the end of the day which consists of 20 questions, (10 multiple choice and 10 case study questions). The test lasts for 35 minutes, and you can use the book A Legal and Management GE700A for the final 15 minutes. The pass mark is 80%.
Additional support is available for those who have difficulty with reading or writing. Please let us know in advance where possible so we can help you.
